The organizers of the Ethereum conference EDCON, or Community Ethereum Development Conference, have informed would-be attendees by e-mail that they are cancelling the event. It was scheduled to be held in the first week of April in Vienna, Austria, has been canceled. by the organizers due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus. The e-mail cited the spread of the highly contagious virus in neighboring Italy as the specific reason for the cancellation.
“The well-being of the Ethereum community is the most important thing for us. As we are all well aware of the COVID-19 epidemic, we made the hard decision today to cancel EDCON 2020,” the organizers wrote. “The decision was difficult but necessary considering the safety and health for the host city Vienna, the venue provider WU University, as well as all the speakers and attendees.”
An important Ethereum community event
The multiday conference EDCON has been held annually since 2017. It includes an array of high-profile speakers, discussions, workshops and training sessions. Those scheduled to speak at this year’s conference included important industry personalities such as Vitalek Buterin, Vlad Zamfir and Emin Gün Sirer.
The COVID-19 outbreak is impacting economic activity across various industries worldwide, especially in East Asia. At time of writing, the virus has infected 83,665 people since December 31, 2019, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The ECDC also say there have been 2,857 fatalities during that period. While the percentage of fatal cases is relatively low compared to past virus outbreaks such as SARS, health officials consider the speed at which COVID-19 is spreading alarming.
